TWO best friends who organised a fund-raising garage sale have raised £121 for charities close to their hearts.

News – Macey Jarvis, 8, and Ellie Parker, 9, from Beowulf Covert, in Stretton – fund-raising eventMacey Jarvis, 8, and Ellie Parker, 9, from Beowulf Covert, in Stretton, scoured their toy boxes to find items to sell, made their own advertising leaflets and then roped their friends in to help.

The John of Rolleston School pupils began organising their event three months ago and decided to raise money for Cancer Research — the disease has affected Macey’s family — Burton Queen’s Hospital — which the girls have both visited in the last 12 months — and Children In Need, to help other youngsters less fortunate then themselves.

As part of the preparation, the girls made 196 leaflets, which took three weeks to make and deliver around the neighbourhood.

On the day, they also made a large advertising poster and displayed it on the main road of Athlestan Way.

Macey and Ellie collected all their old toys and games, books, old jewellery, sporting equipment, a rocking horse and Macey’s dad’s bike, and sat for four hours collecting cash for the worthy charities.

The girls’ friends, Cara Adams, 10, Mitchell Adams, 7, and Rosie Jarvis, 10, who all live in the same street, supported them on the day and helped collect cash and arrange the stall.

Macey’s father, Richard Jarvis, said: “It was the first time the girls have ever organised anything like this and it was truly brilliant.

“We had a great amount of support from the neighbours and it was a fun communal event. They are really proud of what they have achieved.

“I think in the current climate it was fantastic. Children often tend to spend their money on computer games, but the girls wanted to sell their games and fun toys to benefit other people, and the amount of effort they put in to the whole event has made us all really proud of them.

“We are also really grateful to the neighbours who supported us.” In total, £50 is being donated to Children In Need, £50 to Cancer Research and £21 for Burton Queen’s Hospital.

The girls are hoping to organise similar fund-raising events in the future.
